It is helpful to realize that inmates fall into three basic categories:
    1. Federal inmates: convicted of federal crimes and are incarcerated at federal prisons under the jurisdiction of the Federal Bureau of Prisons
    2. State inmates: convicted of state crimes are held by the state Department of Corrections.
    3. County inmates: held in county jails typically under the jurisdiction of a county sheriff.
In order to find the inmate, you have to look in the right place.
