Always Looking For New Reality TV

The prospect of new reality TV elicits excitement in some and groans in others.

Do we really need another batch of rich faux drama, bachelors breaking up, people losing weight, performers competing against each other, and unique families? What happened to actual reality? When you think about it, we’re taking time away from the real world to focus on someone else’s TV edited version of unusual, ‘real’ experiences that you don’t see every day.

There was a time when new reality TV was charming and novel. Up until then, TV had been all about fiction, imagination and fantasy. The idea to broadcast life as it is was an interesting notion. But slowly the elements of fiction began to creep in footage was rearranged, parts left out, situations construed to heighten drama, and slowly but surely reality TV started to resemble its fictional counterpart.

new reality TVGranted, it’s not like reality TV started from the top and plummeted downhill. It was more like a low up to a high, and then down to an all time low. Early reality TV show contestants revealed that what was televised was significantly different than what had actually occurred, and to this day it’s a situation that probably still occurs.

However, some new reality TV shows that came after were less contrived and even inspirational. There’s no denying the skills of contestants on America’s Got Talent or The X Factor, and it’s moving to see where these people are coming from and how they’re coming closer to achieving their dreams.

Maybe part of the reason new reality TV isn’t feeling so new is

because many of them are just sequels of series that have been airing way past the first season. And reality TV has taken an extremely dark, ugly turn with the recent controversy of Jon and Kate Plus 8, rumored to become Kate Plus 8.

The entire nation has been following their acrimonious divorce, taking sides but mostly expressing disgust over the entire situation and sympathizing with their kids. Many feel that if the show continued, it would be simply for the sake of money, and it’s impossible for the show to be just about raising 8 kids anymore.

As the new reality TV shows of 2010 and 2011 approach us on the horizon, will we watch out for them or shut the blinds? Regardless of our actions, new reality TV is still television in the end, and the show will always go on.

Hollywood Celebrity Gossip Fun

Brad Pitt left Jennifer Aniston for Angelina Jolie. Paula Abdul is leaving American Idol. Robert Pattinson might be going out with Kristen Stewart. Hollywood celebrity gossip is a pastime that never ceases to fascinate and entertain. It’s to the extent that now a whole industry is based on giving you the low down on what’s up with people that are more famous and good-looking than you, full of magazines like People and Star and people like Perez Hilton who run gossip websites.

But why do we care about Hollywood celebrity gossip so much? One celebrity allegedly hooked up with another one. Did they or did they not? It could be one or the other, no one knows, so what was the point of bringing it up in the first place? It’s because we’re talking about celebrities here. Take a statement like, “There either was someone shopping at Beverly Center or there wasn’t.” That would be a completely inane statement. But saying something like “Jessica Alba was shopping at Beverly Center but it could not have been” is ten times more interesting and meaningful. A mundane activity like shopping suddenly becomes exciting when a celebrity is involved. Maybe there’s an element of fantasy to it—celebrities in our society are like the equivalent of heroes in ancient civilization, but when it comes down to it, they’re people too.

People are people. They eat, they sleep, they shop, and they can be nice or make mistakes. But being a celebrity dramatically enhances all of these aspects for better or for worse. The world loves you, and wants to look like you, or to meet you, or to be like you. On the other hand, make one small error and the world judges you mercilessly. And people are gossiping about you all the time.

Some researchers have suggested that gossip functions like a social adhesive. It’s evolutionarily advantageous for people to know what’s going on in their environment. Does Hollywood celebrity gossip really contribute to building social relationships? This is somewhat feasible—Hollywood celebrity gossip is a hot topic that enlivens any conversation and gives people something in common to discuss. Ironically, paying so much attention to someone else’s more glamorous life might actually be a way of paying more attention to your own. Regardless, it remains debatable whether celebrity gossip is really worth following, but in any case, Hollywood celebrity gossip is unlikely to fade away anytime soon as a popular activity—you have to admit that it’s fun, and people like to do fun things.

Las Vagas Hotels Still Going

Sin City, as Las Vegas is known, is one of the premier destinations for travelers both international and domestic. It offers a blend of nightlife, gambling, dining and other entertainment options that is unmatched anywhere in the world.

As a result, it’s always beneficial to look for the best las vagas hotels and hotel deals you can find. The key is realizing that not all las vagas hotels have to be hotel/casinos. It’s sometimes beneficial to stay off the strip, or away from downtown, in the likes of a holiday inn or a best western rather than in one of the monster casino/resorts that immediately leap to mind when people think of las vagas hotels.

Of course, there’s a reason people do think of the Strip when they think of las vagas hotels. It’s because these hotels are spectacular, nigh unmatched anywhere around the world. Take “The Mirage”, for example. It’s the first of the great las vagas hotels, built 20 years ago. Wikipedia tells the story this way:

The Mirage was built by developer Steve Wynn and designed by Joel Bergman. It opened in November 1989 and was the first resort that was built with the money of Wall Street through the use of junk bonds.

The Mirage was the most expensive hotel/casino in history, with a construction cost of $630 million. The hotel’s distinctive gold windows get their color from actual gold used in the tinting process. It was reported that the resort would have to bring in a million dollars a day to pay off a 7-year construction loan. But in fact the Mirage did so well, the loan was paid off in just 18 months.

Its construction is also considered very noteworthy in that Wynn had set a new standard for Vegas resorts, and is widely considered to be the father of today’s Las Vegas. Prior to the Mirage’s opening, the city was experiencing a decline in tourism that began in the 70s, especially around the time the state of New Jersey legalized gambling and tourists (in particular those on the East Coast) began to frequent the casinos of Atlantic City. Also, this was a time when Las Vegas was no longer considered a fashionable destination, so a new, high-profile, project was necessary to jump-start the ailing industry. When it opened, the Mirage was the first casino to use security cameras full time on all table games.

And what’s amazing is that some of the new places – like Palazzo, Bellaggio, Venetian, THE Hotel and the remodeled Caesar’s Palace – make Mirage look tiny and out of date! Las Vegas has changed much in the past two decades, and there’s no better example of how than by looking at the strip itself.

It doesn’t matter how you spell it, Vegas is known worldwide and there is no confusion that this is a unique vacation destination.
